SUMMARY
The role of the EEG Tech reports to the Sleep/EEG Manager. This position is responsible for performing Electroencephalography (EEG), Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), Long Term Monitoring (LTM), Intensive Care Unit Continuous EEG monitoring (ICU/cEEG). The technical recording of Neurodiagnostic procedures, requires the technologist to exercise a significant degree of independent judgment. Neurodiagnostic procedures, including patient interaction, safety, and appropriate system settings, are tailored to the individual patient’s needs, the reason for the referral, and medical history. Must have the ability to interact with patients and physicians and possess the ability to work with computers.
This position will spend 60% of the time standing and walking with some intermittent sitting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. This position may be exposed to communicable diseases and blood/body fluids.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- The EEG technologist records, monitors, and analyzes nervous system function to promote the effective treatment of pathologic conditions.
- The technologists record electrical activity arising from the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, somatosensory or motor nerve systems using a variety of techniques and instruments.
- The technologists prepare data and documentation for interpretation by a physician.
- Considerable individual initiative, reasoning skill, and sound judgment are all expected of the Neurodiagnostic technologist. These duties are performed in a manner consistent with technologists’ training, education, experience and credentialing under the direction of administrative and clinical leadership as defined by facility policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Education: H.S. Diploma or GED Neurodiagnostic Technology education from a program reviewed by the Committee on Accreditation for Education in Neurodiagnostic Technology (CoA-NDT) accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or an Associate’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university and credential in an area of Neurodiagnostic specialty from the appropriate credentialing board.
- Licensure and Certifications: BLS, Certification by a nationally recognized certification board and holds either the Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist (R. EEG T.), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential.
- Experience: Three years of experience in the Neurodiagnostic field which includes two years of experience in their specialty modality of practice. This credential provides findings, results and a descriptive analysis according to the facility policy and procedure manual. Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Neurodiagnostic Program, or an Associate’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university is desired.
