GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION


The 911 Communications Specialist is a unique position due to the specialized knowledge, skills and training that are required to be able to excel in this type of profession. The 911 Communications Specialist is an emergency professional and the first point of contact for citizens where life and property are threatened and need immediate emergency assistance from police, fire or medical services. This is a high-intensity occupation where working fast paced, stressful, life and death emergency decisions will be made daily. The 911 Communication Specialist is responsible for answering both 911 emergency and non-emergency lines, creating a call for service (CFS), typing "live" accurate information from the caller, while sending the appropriate emergency responders to the correct location. Time is always critical, so multi-tasking skills are a must when dispatching all types of calls. Requires operating a multi-channel emergency radio system to dispatch emergency responders, while transmitting information and messages upon request, according to policies and procedures. This position monitors public safety units in the field, retrieves and enters pertinent data into ACIC/NCIC computer systems, operates 911 emergency equipment, TDD/TTY and other related communications equipment.
