What you'll do...
Role summary:As a Distinguished Software Engineer – AI Shopping Experiences, you will provide system-level technical leadership for the platforms powering Walmart’s next generation of AI-driven shopping. You’ll own critical architectural decisions across mobile, AI, and supporting platform capabilities, translating long-term domain strategy into scalable enterprise systems. Operating with significant autonomy, you’ll establish architecture and engineering standards, drive reliability and scalability across multiple platforms, and ensure our AI experiences can evolve rapidly while serving millions of customers. You’ll influence domain strategy and mentor Principal and Staff engineers across the organization.

Our team is building the technology behind Walmart’s AI-powered shopping experiences, making shopping more intuitive, personalized, and actionable. We bring AI throughout the customer journey—from discovery and decision-making to planning, purchasing, and agentic actions. Our work spans customer experiences, mobile platforms, AI orchestration, and commerce systems. We operate at the intersection of rapidly evolving AI technology and Walmart’s massive consumer scale, creating reusable platforms and architectural foundations that enable teams across the organization to safely and rapidly deliver AI-powered experiences.
What you'll do:
- Own system-level architecture across critical AI shopping platforms and experiences.
- Translate long-term domain strategy into scalable architectures, platforms, and execution plans.
- Establish enterprise-grade patterns for reliability, scalability, observability, integration, and performance.
- Drive architectural decisions and implementation standards across multiple platforms and teams.
- Identify and resolve systemic technical constraints before they limit product or organizational scale.
- Provide deep technical leadership across mobile, AI, backend, and distributed systems.
- Lead architecture for complex cross-domain initiatives and influence enterprise technology decisions.
- Mentor Principal and Staff engineers and raise technical leadership across the organization.
What you'll bring:
- Extensive experience architecting and operating large-scale, enterprise-grade consumer platforms and distributed systems.
- Deep expertise across multiple technology domains, including mobile, backend, platform architecture, and AI systems.
- Proven ability to own architecture and technical strategy spanning multiple platforms and organizations.
- Strong experience designing for reliability, scalability, performance, observability, and operational excellence.
- Experience with Generative AI, LLMs, agentic systems, or AI platforms is highly desirable.
- Track record of translating ambiguous business strategy into durable technical architecture.
- Demonstrated influence at senior engineering and organizational leadership levels.
- Experience mentoring Principal and Staff engineers and developing technical leaders.

Sunnyvale, California US-11656: The annual salary range for this position is $169,000.00 - $338,000.00
Bentonville, Arkansas US-10735: The annual salary range for this position is $130,000.00 - $260,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
