Role summary:As a Principal Designer, you’ll lead the charge in defining the next generation of scalable, intelligent design systems—infused with automation and AI at their core. You won’t just shape patterns; you’ll architect foundational frameworks that power experiences for millions of users and unlock velocity across entire product ecosystems. This role demands visionary thinking and flawless execution. You’ll turn complexity into clarity, translating dense workflows and massive datasets into elegant, accessible, and future-proof solutions.
About the team:
The Global Design Systems team builds and maintains standards that are used in products and services across Walmart, enhancing the lives of millions worldwide. We create richly compelling digital experiences for customers, associates and partners – whether they are at home, in our stores, or on the go. At Walmart, design systems are used across an expansive portfolio, from our primary consumer experiences to the apps our supply chain teams use to move items around the world. In this role you will equip our associates with a system that enables them to move faster, and with more confidence.
What you'll do:
- Designing at the highest level of craft for a broad population of users.
- Leading a roadmap of work and collaborating seamlessly with cross-functional partners through delivery.
- Actively soliciting feedback from peers and cross-functional stakeholders through the product design lifecycle.
- Eagerness to support, bringing a service mindset to daily user questions and feedback.
- Championing (and mentoring coworkers) in AI-native ways of working
- Engaging the design research team at the right points during the design process to ensure the right insights inform the work.
- Rapid prototyping and experimenting in a fast-paced environment.
- Championing the Design Thinking philosophy throughout the business.
- Communicating effectively with kindness and empathy.
- Collaborating seamlessly with cross-functional partners.
What you'll bring:
- Strong understanding of enterprise-scale design systems, including tokens, patterns, components, theming and usage documentation, system-compliant generative UX, and AI contracts—and how they scale with AI.
- Expert-level experience in AI-native tools like Cursor, Claude, or similar.
- Familiarity with engineering workflows, versioning, and how design tokens translate into code (e.g., JSON, CSS variables)
- Builds and maintains system libraries—with an eye toward generative UX and AI-assisted design workflows.
- Actively contributes to design system governance
- Uses systems thinking to simplify complexity and create intuitive, scalable solutions.
- Facilitates Design Thinking to unlock creativity and alignment across cross-functional teams.
- Embraces ambiguity and energizes teams through change.
- Leads by example—mentoring, doing, and shaping team culture.

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00 - $220,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
