What you'll do...

Description As a Data Engineer on the Global Data Foundation team, you will play a vital role in developing and maintaining end-to-end data solutions that power critical business decisions and product experiences at scale. You will be responsible for designing and implementing data ingestion pipelines, transformation workflows, and consumption-layer data products, integrating diverse technologies to deliver cohesive, high-quality data assets. This includes working with big data frameworks such as Apache Spark and Scala, orchestration tools like Airflow, storage systems including Hive, BigQuery, and GCS, and streaming platforms such as Kafka. In this role, you will leverage your data engineering expertise to ensure data solutions are accurate, efficient, and aligned with Walmart’s business goals. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including Data Scientists, Product Managers, and Platform Engineers—to ensure the timely delivery and high performance of data products. Additionally, you will help drive best practices in pipeline development, data quality validation, metadata management, and deployment, while staying current with evolving industry trends and technologies across the data ecosystem. About the Customer Area Customer Area Tech focuses on managing and delivering world-class products, driving policy compliance, building strategic partnerships, and developing scalable pipelines and self-service tools. The organization is responsible for implementing Global Privacy Technology Products to earn customer and associate trust. We also analyze customer data to generate insights that inform business decisions and drive improvements in customer experiences across retail operations. By leveraging advanced data science techniques and tools, we aim to understand customer behavior and trends at scale. What You Will Do
  • Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and backend systems.
  • Integrate and optimize data from multiple sources, ensuring quality and reliability.
  • Implement and enhance data processing frameworks and tools.
  • Design, manage, and govern data schemas throughout their lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on data-driven initiatives.
  • Continuously seek improvements in software effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Adhere to company policies, values, and ethical standards.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or a related field with 3+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems.
  • Proficiency in scripting and programming languages including Python, Java, Scala, and SQL.
  • Experience with RESTful APIs, OAuth, JWT, and API gateways.
  • Strong background in Java, multithreading, data structures, algorithms, and design patterns, with experience building high-performance, scalable applications.
  • Proficiency in Java, Spring, and Spring Boot, with hands-on experience building large-scale backend microservices.
  • Strong experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., Postgres, Cassandra, Cosmos) and distributed SQL engines such as Presto.
  • Required experience with Presto and Trino for distributed SQL query processing across large-scale data sources.
  • Hands-on experience with big data technologies (Hadoop, Apache Spark, Kafka) and workflow orchestration tools (Apache Airflow).
  • Familiarity with in-memory processing and data formats such as Avro, Parquet, and JSON.
  • Expertise in designing, deploying, and managing scalable and secure solutions on cloud platforms, including Azure and GCP, with a focus on automation, monitoring, and optimization.
  • Strong software engineering practices, including version control and CI/CD (GitHub).
  • Experience with unit, functional, and integration testing using frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, and Jest, along with code quality tools like Sonar.
  • Experience using Kibana and Elasticsearch for monitoring, analyzing, and visualizing large-scale logs and datasets.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI coding agents and developer assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar tools) to accelerate development velocity, improve code quality, and enable faster iteration cycles.
