Position Summary...
We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Data Scientist to join the Decision Sciences team at Walmart, supporting US Store Operations. In this role, you will lead advanced analytics, experimentation, and measurement efforts that enable data-driven decisions across store operations initiatives. You will partner with business and technical stakeholders to define success metrics, evaluate impact, and generate insights that improve operational outcomes.A key part of this role is supporting and enhancing the experimentation and measurement platform developed by the team, with a focus on automation, scale, and usability. The ideal candidate combines strong statistical and machine learning expertise with business acumen, platform thinking, and the ability to influence across functions. This role also requires going beyond experiment readouts by conducting deep dives that help the business understand the true impact of initiatives, what drove value, what did not, and what actions should be taken next.
What you'll do...
Responsibilities
Partner with US Store Operations and cross-functional stakeholders to identify high-impact problems and translate them into experimentation, measurement, and analytical solutions.
Design and interpret experiments and measurement frameworks, including defining success metrics, KPIs, and guardrails for key initiatives.
Apply causal inference, statistical modeling, and machine learning to evaluate impact and generate actionable insights.
Conduct post-experiment deep dives to understand true business impact, identify value drivers, and determine what worked, what did not, and the best next course of action.
Analyze changes in key metrics and perform root-cause analyses to uncover opportunities for operational improvement.
Enhance the team’s experimentation and measurement platform through automation, scalability, and improved analytical rigor.
Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to business and technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.
Qualifications
Master’s or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field.
5+ years of experience in data science, decision science, experimentation, or advanced analytics roles.
Strong expertise in experimentation, A/B testing, quasi-experimental methods, and causal inference.
Hands-on experience building and applying statistical, predictive, and machine learning models to solve business problems.
Strong programming skills in Python and SQL with experience writing production-quality, scalable, and maintainable analytical code.
Experience building analytical frameworks and translating ambiguous business problems into measurable solutions.
Familiarity with data visualization and storytelling tools to communicate insights effectively.
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence decisions across business and technical teams.
Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and deliver high-quality work with urgency.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in retail, store operations, supply chain, or other operational business environments.
Experience contributing to or enhancing internal data science platforms, experimentation platforms, or measurement systems.
Experience with workflow automation, scalable analytical tooling, or decision-support systems.
Exposure to or hands-on experience with agent-based systems, AI agents, or LLM-enabled workflow automation.
