Position Summary...
What you'll do...
As a Software Engineer III on the Global Integrated Fulfillment (GIF) team at Walmart, you will design and build scalable backend services that power critical in-store fulfillment workflows such as picking, storage, audit, and dispense. You will work closely with Product, Engineering, and cross-functional partners to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions, drive high-level design, and deliver reliable, high-performing applications. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, the ability to ramp up quickly on complex domains, and hands-on experience building distributed systems at scale. You will also help strengthen operational excellence by resolving production issues, driving root-cause fixes, and improving system observability, reliability, and long-term maintainability.About the Team
Global Integrated Fulfillment (GIF) powers key in-store fulfillment capabilities that enable associates to process customer orders generated through Walmart’s eCommerce platforms. The team builds and maintains backend systems that support critical workflows including picking, storage, audit, and dispense, with a strong focus on scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
This is a high-impact engineering space with complex distributed workflows, deep integration across platforms, and direct influence on store operations and customer experience. The team works on large-scale, business-critical systems and is well suited for engineers who can quickly understand complex problem spaces, navigate ambiguity, and deliver practical, scalable solutions.
What You’ll Do
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions and drive high-level design for small to large, complex engineering projects.
- Design, develop, test, and maintain backend applications and microservices that support critical fulfillment workflows.
- Build robust, high-performing distributed systems using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Kafka, and cloud-native patterns.
- Review code developed by other engineers and provide actionable feedback to ensure engineering best practices, quality, and maintainability.
- Guide and support small groups of engineers, including offshore associates, across assigned projects.
- Troubleshoot production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and drive durable fixes to improve system stability and business continuity.
- Partner with business and product teams on operational support and data analysis related to solutions deployed in production.
- Drive improvements in monitoring, alerting, and operational readiness to identify and address issues before they impact business systems.
- Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge-sharing materials, updating content as products and platforms evolve.
- Support Walmart’s culture and values by maintaining high standards of integrity, compliance, and engineering excellence.
What You’ll Bring
- Strong experience designing and building complex distributed systems using Java and Spring Boot microservices.
- Proven ability to quickly understand new domains, grasp system complexity, and turn requirements into well-structured technical solutions.
- Deep hands-on experience with Kafka and event-driven architecture patterns in large-scale production systems.
- Strong experience working with NoSQL databases such as Cosmos DB, including designing for scale, performance, and reliability.
- Expertise in building high-performance, highly available, and scalable backend services and APIs.
- Solid understanding of service-oriented architecture, RESTful services, asynchronous processing, and multi-threaded application design.
- Experience troubleshooting production issues, conducting root-cause analysis, and implementing long-term corrective actions.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, preferably Azure, and modern observability and monitoring tools such as OpenObserve, Grafana, Dynatrace, and MMS.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, and business teams while mentoring junior engineers and driving execution.
- Prior experience in eCommerce or retail technology is a plus.
