The Accounting Operations Centers of Excellence team is a centralized hub dedicated to optimizing and automating accounting processes, leveraging advanced technologies, and fostering specialized expertise. Its core purpose is to drive innovation and continuous improvement in financial operations, ensuring accuracy in our financial reporting and results.
The COE team has specialized teams dedicated to the following business areas across North America segments. Supply Chain, H&W, Financial Services, Merch Services, Compensation & Benefits, Cash & Banking, Ecommerce, and AP/AR.
Role Summary
The Senior Manager, Accounting – Center of Excellence (COE) is a highly experienced individual contributor responsible for delivering complex accounting execution, governance, and transformation outcomes across designated business areas. This role serves as a subject‑matter expert and trusted advisor, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial results while driving standardization, automation, and continuous improvement across accounting processes.
This position does not have direct reports but operates with significant influence across cross‑functional partners, COE leaders, and extended delivery teams. What You'll Do: Accounting Operations & Close Excellence
- Execute and oversee complex accounting activities supporting monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles.
- Prepare, review, and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting documentation in accordance with US GAAP and company policies.
- Research and resolve complex accounting issues, variances, and reconciling items to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial results.
- Serve as a primary escalation point for high‑risk or complex accounting areas within the COE.
Financial Reporting, Controls & Compliance
- Ensure strong governance and compliance with internal control requirements, SOX, and balance sheet reconciliation policies.
- Partner with Internal Audit, External Audit, and Controllership to support audits and drive timely issue resolution.
- Assess the impact of new or changing accounting standards and ensure appropriate application and disclosure.
Process Improvement, Standardization & Automation
- Identify opportunities to simplify, standardize, and automate accounting processes to reduce manual effort and improve quality.
- Lead or support transformation initiatives aligned to COE and Digital Accountant objectives, including automation, AI‑enabled tools, and system enhancements.
- Develop and document One Best Way processes and support adoption across the COE through influence and change leadership.
- Track and communicate measurable outcomes such as close accuracy, efficiency gains, risk reduction, and capacity creation.
Business Partnership & Advisory
- Act as a trusted accounting advisor to Finance, FP&A, Operations, Technology, and other business partners.
- Provide clear, practical guidance on accounting implications for business initiatives, system changes, and operating model shifts.
- Translate complex accounting requirements into actionable, business‑friendly solutions that support decision‑making.
Leadership Without Direct Authority
- Influence outcomes through expertise, credibility, and strong partnership rather than formal people leadership.
- Mentor and support peers, managers, and delivery teams through knowledge sharing, coaching, and technical guidance.
- Model COE and Walmart values by demonstrating ownership, collaboration, and a continuous‑improvement mindset
What You'll Bring:
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting (or related field)
- 5+ years of relevant field experience
- Process driven operational accounting experience
- Proven experience to partner and influence
- Demonstrated Ownership capability w/ a sense of urgency
- Able to stay calm and not get easily flustered

- Relevant Professional Certifications (CPA, etc. - desired, but not a must have)

The annual salary range for this position is $90,000.00 - $180,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
