Staff Software Engineer — Technology Spend Management & TCO Enablement (Job Description)
Role summary The Staff Software Engineer designs and delivers platforms that improve Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) visibility and decision-making for technology spend. This role builds data products and services that blend financial income statement views with operational drivers (e.g., wages/hours, initiatives and Jira stories, cloud spend and usage) so leaders can prioritize investments based on cost, value, and outcomes. Key responsibilities- Architect and implement scalable services and data pipelines that unify finance and operational datasets into trusted, explainable cost models.
- Define domain models and metrics for TCO (allocation, attribution, unit economics, showback/chargeback) and ensure traceability from executive rollups to granular drivers.
- Build APIs and user-facing or downstream-consumable datasets enabling cost exploration, forecasting, and prioritization workflows.
- Establish data quality, governance, and controls (lineage, reconciliation, auditability) to align operational data with financial reporting.
- Partner with Finance, Engineering, Product, and Cloud/Platform teams to translate business questions into measurable signals and actionable insights.
- Drive technical direction across teams: design reviews, standards, reliability, performance, and operational excellence.
- Mentor engineers and raise engineering quality through best practices in testing, observability, and secure-by-design development.
- Strong experience building distributed systems and/or data platforms (batch/streaming), with a track record of leading designs across teams.
- Proficiency in modern backend development (APIs, services) and data engineering concepts (modeling, ETL/ELT, orchestration, warehouses/lakes).
- Demonstrated ability to reason about cost attribution, metrics, and tradeoffs; comfort working with finance stakeholders and ambiguous requirements.
- Excellent communication skills; able to influence without authority and align technical work to business outcomes.
- Improved accuracy and timeliness of TCO reporting and attribution.
- Clear linkage from spend to operational drivers and delivered value.
- Increased adoption by engineering and finance leaders for prioritization and investment decisions.
- Reduced effort to reconcile financial and operational views through automation and governance.
