About the Role

As a Staff Java/Data Engineer, you will play a critical leadership role in designing, building, and optimizing the next generation of Walmart’s data and backend systems. You’ll influence architecture, set engineering standards, and mentor teams while developing highly scalable solutions that power Walmart’s digital and physical ecosystems.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead Technical Delivery: Design and build backend systems and data pipelines using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices architectures.
  • Scale Enterprise Systems: Develop and maintain distributed, event-driven systems using Kafka and other modern frameworks.
  • Data Engineering: Architect and optimize data pipelines, working with both relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, Cassandra, MySQL).
  • Cloud & DevOps: Drive automation and resilient deployments leveraging cloud-native practices (AWS/GCP/Azure), CI/CD pipelines, and containerization.
  • Architecture Influence: Participate in system design reviews, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards and scalability goals.
  • Mentorship & Leadership: Guide engineers through coaching, code reviews, and architectural mentorship.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product, Data Science, and Platform teams to deliver solutions that align with business priorities.

What You’ll Bring

  • 8–12+ years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on Java backend and data engineering.
  • Deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, distributed systems, and event-driven architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with Kafka, CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions), and cloud-native platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Proven ability to influence system architecture and design patterns for scale and resilience.
  • Leadership skills with experience mentoring engineers and influencing cross-team technical decisions.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with a track record of delivering results in complex enterprise environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with big data frameworks (Spark, Flink, Hadoop).
  • Exposure to machine learning pipelines or feature store integrations.
  • Contributions to open-source Java/data frameworks.
  • Retail, supply chain, or e-commerce domain knowledge.

Live Better U is a Walmart-paid education benefit program for full-time and part-time associates in Walmart and Sam's Club facilities. The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00-$220,000.00

Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
