Fleet Mechanic / Equipment Technician

The Opportunity

UHP is seeking an experienced Fleet Mechanic / Equipment Technician to support and maintain a diverse fleet of vehicles, heavy equipment, generators, utility vehicles, and campus machinery critical to daily operations and construction efforts.

This role is responsible for preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair work, and equipment reliability across a wide range of diesel-powered and mechanical systems. The ideal candidate is hands-on, self-sufficient, mechanically strong, and comfortable operating in both shop and field environments.

The Fleet Includes

  • Construction equipment (excavators, dozers, rollers, skid steers, etc.)
  • Vocational trucks (dump trucks, water trucks, fire trucks, etc.)
  • Diesel vehicles and buses
  • Utility vehicles and UTVs
  • Small engine equipment (mowers, chainsaws, etc.)
  • Diesel generators

This position plays a key role in maintaining operational readiness, reducing downtime, extending equipment life, and supporting the continued growth of the UHP campus.

What You’ll Do

Preventive Maintenance & Service

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance across fleet equipment and machinery
  • Conduct oil, filter, fluid, and routine service work
  • Maintain maintenance schedules based on equipment hours and mileage
  • Inspect equipment regularly to identify potential failures before breakdowns occur

Diagnostics & Repairs

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, diesel, and electrical system issues
  • Troubleshoot emissions systems, including DEF and after-treatment systems
  • Repair heavy equipment systems including hydraulics, drivetrains, and electrical components
  • Perform repairs on diesel trucks, utility vehicles, generators, and small engine equipment

Fabrication & Welding

  • Perform welding and fabrication repairs as needed
  • Repair buckets, mounts, brackets, and structural components
  • Modify or reinforce equipment to support operational requirements

Fleet Reliability & Operations

  • Maintain high equipment uptime and minimize operational downtime
  • Track and maintain campus fuel depot operations
  • Prioritize repairs based on operational and construction needs
  • Coordinate major repairs with outside vendors and service providers when required
  • Inspect potential vehicles and equipment prior to purchase

Generator Maintenance

  • Perform service and troubleshooting on diesel backup generators
  • Conduct monthly load testing and ensure generator readiness and reliability

Documentation & Tracking

  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, work orders, and repair documentation
  • Track service intervals, equipment hours, and completed maintenance tasks

Safety & Training

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment
  • Follow all safety procedures while operating tools and equipment
  • Train staff operators on proper and safe equipment use
  • Ensure repaired equipment meets operational safety standards

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in heavy equipment, diesel, or fleet repair
  • Strong experience working with diesel engines and hydraulic systems
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical and emissions systems
  • Ability to perform welding and fabrication repairs
  • Strong understanding of preventive maintenance practices
  • Ability to independently diagnose and repair mechanical issues
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Military equipment maintenance background
  • Experience supporting contractor fleets or heavy equipment dealerships
  • Certifications in diesel, heavy equipment, or fleet repair
  • Experience servicing diesel generators
  • Experience maintaining emergency or vocational vehicles
  • Advanced welding or fabrication experience

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
  • Ability to work around heavy equipment and machinery
  • Ability to work in both outdoor and shop environments
