Summary of Job Duties:
The Network Engineer II designs, implements, and maintains reliable and secure network infrastructures, including local area networks (LAN), wireless local area networks (WLAN), and wide area networks (WAN), to support the University’s academic and administrative operations. This position configures, installs, and supports network-related hardware and software such as servers, routers, switches, and other network devices, while continuously monitoring network performance, availability, and integrity. The Network Engineer II troubleshoots and resolves complex network and connectivity issues escalated from lower tiers of support, addressing both cloud-based and on-premises infrastructure. Responsibilities include automating routine network tasks, evaluating the effectiveness of automation solutions, and creating, testing, and maintaining security measures such as access authentication controls and disaster recovery processes. The role also involves mentoring team members on technical issues, maintaining comprehensive technical documentation, communicating with users as needed to resolve issues or explain system changes, and proactively recommending improvements to enhance network performance, capacity, scalability, and overall reliability. Other duties as assigned.Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
At least four years of industry-related experience as a Network Engineer, Senior Network Engineer, or Network Administrator
Advanced certification in networking (e.g. JNCIS, CCNA, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related from an accredited institution of higher education
An advanced degree in any field, such as a master’s degree; information technology degree receives increased consideration
In-depth understanding of communication protocols (mainly TCP/IP) and routing protocols (e.g. BGP, OSPF)
Familiarity with access control models and network security
Knowledge of coding languages for scripting (e.g Python, Perl)
Experience with network diagnostic, monitoring and analysis tools (e.g. SolarWinds network tools)
A professional network certification from a leading network technology vendor that displays proficiency in route/switch technology; CCNP, CCDP, etc
A network certification from a leading technology vendor in a specialization, such as data center, network security, virtualization, or equivalent
IT related work experience in higher education
IT related work experience in a large enterprise of 1000+ employees
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Strong customer service skills
Highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail skills
Able to conduct research into networking issues and products as required
Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language
