Summary of Job Duties:

Upward Bound Tutors will conduct group tutoring sessions to high school participants of the Upward Bound Programs in core academic subjects. Various subject areas will be needed to meet the needs to the participants in the program. The position reports to the Upward Bound Academic Specialist.


Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Work Experience: Minimum qualifications include completed course work in the subject area with 3.0 or higher average grade point; sophomore or higher standing at a post-secondary institution; and well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: Professional high school teaching and/or tutoring experience preferred.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide tutoring to Upward Bound students to assist with comprehension of course work, and work with program staff to improve student retention and success.
  • Promote effective academic readiness and good study habits.
  • Maintain attendance data and provide tutoring evaluations of student learning to ensure positive academic progress is achieved.
  • Enhance learning concepts and strategies; test preparation; and assist with skill building as needed.
  • Subject areas needed: English composition and literature; history; social sciences: all areas; Mathematics (Geometry, Algebra I, II, III, College Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Probability & Statistics); Science (Physical Science, Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics); Spanish.

Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates. Requires consistent on-time attendance.

  • Ability to present material using verbal, visual, and/or written methods.
  • Ability to incorporate technology into tutorial sessions.

Working Relationships: Tutors will work closely with Upward Bound staff and student participants.

Special Job Dimensions: Tutors may work up to 12 hours per week. Tutoring takes place Monday – Thursday between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm and occasionally on Saturdays. Tutors will be scheduled based upon demand for subject, time availability and student needs.

Background Check Requirements. Criminal background check; Arkansas Mandated Reporters training; and MVR (motor vehicle registry) required for this position.
