Summary of Job Duties:
The Animal Science Department at the University of Arkansas has a 150 sow herd which supports a comprehensive research and teaching program. Facilities include farrowing for 40 sows, a 48 pen conventional nursery with a capacity of 6 pigs/pen. Duties include all aspects of management of the swine research unit at Savoy, as well as the feeding, and health care of the research swine herd and replacement females; management of the breeding program; maintenance of farm facilities; and the implementation of experimental protocols as outlined by the research faculty in charge and as needed for other cooperating researchers. The individual selected will be expected to assist principal investigators, graduate students, and research personnel in conducting experiments and collecting data from the farm and other related information and records as required. Because of the intensive nature of the research and teaching responsibilities, the person must be experienced in management of swine. The successful applicant must supervise, manage, and evaluate part-time labor and carry out any additional duties as determined by the immediate supervisor or Head of the Department of Animal Science.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications Minimum educational requirement of a B.S. degree in Animal Science or a closely related field. Because of the intensive nature of the research and teaching responsibilities, candidates must be experienced in management of swine. Preferred Qualifications Experience in management of full and part-time labor (including student workers) in a university setting. Experience or interest in animal research is highly desired. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of nutritional needs and care of large animals. Knowledge and experience with animal behavior and skills in collection of data from the farm, plus ability to maintain animal inventory records, farm equipment records and other related information and records as required. Must be physically able to handle large farm animals and conduct routine farm work including the maintenance or construction of needed facilities.
