Summary of Job Duties:
The School of Art in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art, Sculpture to start in August 2025. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment with a standard workload of 40% teaching, 40% research/creative activity, and 20% service. The successful candidate will assist in leading the Sculpture media area while contributing to the strength and energy of the School of Art as a whole. Applicants should possess knowledge of a wide variety of multidisciplinary art-making strategies centering on or intersecting with sculpture. A strong foundation in sculpture and dedication to expanding the technical and conceptual direction of the discipline is preferred. Our facility accommodates a wide variety of techniques and practices – traditional and digital modeling, wood and metal working, mold making, casting in traditional and alternative media including metal casting, digital fabrication, textiles, installation, public art, and other hybrid and emerging art forms. Applicants should be able to address traditional sculpture practices while possessing expertise in concepts, theory, and methods related to contemporary sculpture. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an ability and interest in fostering interdisciplinary cross-campus relationships and engage with a vibrant local and regional art community. Beyond their primary role in Sculpture, this position will also contribute to teaching and service within School of Art's Foundations program, which serves students pursuing degrees in Studio Art, Graphic Design, and Art Education.
Duties will include:
• Teaching two courses per semester (Fall and Spring) in Studio Art and/or Foundations.
• Maintaining an active program of research.
• Performing graduate and undergraduate student mentoring and advising, including participation in BFA and MFA reviews, MFA thesis committees, and studio visits.
• Collaborative oversight and operation of the Sculpture area including but not limited to assistance in maintaining facilities, overseeing a safe working environment, curriculum development, departmental reviews, executing a budget, managing supplies and equipment, and supervising graduate assistants.
• Assisting in planning and implementing of new undergraduate and graduate courses.
• Participating in program-level advising, committee work, and other program, school, college and university service.
• Actively contributing to program and school recruitment efforts.
• Being a present and active member of the program, School of Art, and university community.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

To foster independent studio practices in Sculpture, we believe in meeting our students and fellow artists on a broad playing field, which offers manifold approaches to making in the 21st century. From traditional sculptural processes to contemporary methodologies incorporating advanced technologies, Sculpture’s mission is to cultivate creative thinking and inventive problem solving by challenging categorical presets to consider Sculpture well beyond the expanded field. Sculpture is committed to providing our students with the tools necessary for synthesis while emphasizing research as the driving force motivating material and formal decisions, process, and context as they relate to historical and contemporary sculpture, critical theory, and collaborative practices.
About the School of Art:
In 2017, the University of Arkansas was awarded a $120 million gift from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation to establish a School of Art in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The gift created the first and only school of art in the state of Arkansas, and is helping to advance art education, design, art history and studio art in the state while providing unparalleled access and opportunity to students. In addition, in 2017, the School of Art also received a $40 million gift from the Windgate Foundation to develop and build a new Studio Art and Graphic Design facility. Most recently, in 2021, the Windgate Foundation gave a $30 million partial challenge grant to develop and build a facility to house a professional gallery, auditorium, the foundations program, as well as idea fabrication and arts entrepreneurship labs. The mission of the School of Art is to develop one of the highest quality educational, research and service programs in the visual arts available nationally. The School of Art is a fully accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and includes 54 faculty, 8 staff members, and more than 500 students. There are currently 8 degree options: BFA in Art Education, BFA in Graphic Design, BFA in Studio Art, BA in Art History, BA in Studio Art, MA in Art Education, MFA in Studio Art, and MDES in Communication Design. The MA degree in Art History of the Americas launched this Fall 2023.

With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate
Master of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Studio Art, Sculpture, or equivalent terminal degree conferred by the start of employment
Teaching experience in higher education (including teaching as a graduate instructor of record)
Demonstrated competency employing and/or teaching sculpture techniques
A research record and portfolio of work that demonstrates either promise or an active practice in the field
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Evidence of a comprehensive knowledge of traditional and contemporary sculpture practices and the ability to teach a wide range of sculpture techniques
An active and excellent record of research achievement and evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, scholastic productivity at the national and/or international level.
Strong evidence of the ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team both on campus and in relevant national service organizations.
Evidence of, or demonstrated commitment to, advising and mentoring undergraduate, honors, and graduate students, including serving on or directing thesis committees and senior projects, etc.
Demonstrated experience in interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and cross-campus collaborations
Demonstrated leadership and ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of students, staff, technicians, and faculty
