Summary of Job Duties:
The Program Technician will work in the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. Responsibilities include oversight of daily laboratory operations and performing routine laboratory diagnostic testing (including serology, bacteriology, and molecular testing), maintenance, and decontamination. The Program Technician will be one of the key personnel to perform high consequence disease testing, such as Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease rtPCR, which will be, as needed, offered as a 24 hour per day/7 day per week service when highly suspect animal disease testing is required. The position requires handling of animal diagnostic specimens and disease-causing agents. The technician will be required to participate in laboratory quality management and safety programs, ensuring compliance, documentation, review, and improvement of the processes, and procedures to provide the highest level of client services and quality laboratory results. The technician will be required to participate in the laboratory rabies protection program, which will require rabies vaccination.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field of study. The applicant must have a strong computer background, excellent communication skills, and be able to work as a team player with other lab members. Repetitive pipetting of samples is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field of study plus 2 years experience or Master's Degree in a scientific field plus 1 year experience. Areas of desirable experience include serology, microbiology, and molecular PCR testing procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to perform disease diagnostic testing.
Knowledge of serology, microbiology, and/or molecular testing methods. Testing methods include ELISA, agar gel immunodiffusion, hemagglutination inhibition, bacterial isolation and identification.
