Summary of Job Duties:

The primary responsibility of the Director of Research and Sponsored Programs is to assist faculty and staff in the identification, development, preparation, and submission of public grants and contract proposals to various funding agencies; assist principal investigators in the development of budgets and budget narratives; provide editorial review of grant proposals; ensure implementation and compliance with all policies and procedures and sponsor requirements. This position requires strong interpersonal and leadership skills and is expected to provide high-level management oversight. The position reports to the Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher education institution in a discipline appropriate for the position
  • Two years experience in grant administration activities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or 5-7 years demonstrated success in grant writing and/or administration
  • Experience managing a grants or special programs department or similar process, including personnel
  • Experience working at a higher education institution
  • Membership in one or more of the following professional associations: NCURA, SRAI, NGMA, NORDP, GPA
  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA) credential

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • ​​Demonstrated success in grant and contracts preparation and administration
  • Experience with budget preparation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with PIs to establish uniform management tools, protocols, timelines, budgets, and processes for submission of applications.
  • Review all grant proposals and awards for compliance with sponsor, federal, state and university regulations and guidelines.
  • Develop, organize, and facilitate training programs on proposal writing and submission process for externally funded research.
  • Document and monitor the proposal lifecycle through regular communications with stakeholders and updates to appropriate databases.
  • Develop internal policies and procedures regarding research grants and contracts proposals and applications.
  • Work with PIs and budget director to conduct periodic reviews of awards, including monitoring spending trends and reviewing restricted budgets.
  • Manage institutional cost-sharing and other matching costs.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of grant opportunities with organizations such as the Department of Education, National Science Foundation, Health Resources and Services Administration, and National Institutes of Health, among others.
  • Foster relationships with the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, Arkansas EPSCoR, the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center, and other state colleges and universities to raise UAFS’s voice in state research infrastructure decisions.
  • Promote diversity in all areas by working with deans, associate deans, and chairs to identify funding opportunities that specifically target underrepresented groups.
  • Champion the work of those writing grants on campus and track submissions, awards, and impact made on campus through grant activity. This position will be called on to report on campus grant activity on a regular basis.
  • Work closely with the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations to ensure the most benefit to UAFS through private, corporate, and public grants.
