Summary of Job Duties:
The Accountant I works under general supervision and is primarily responsible for reconciliation functions in multiple areas and other report preparations. The position is governed by generally accepted accounting practices and procedures; state and federal laws and institutional policies. The position reports to Director of Accounting Services.
Qualifications:
Required Education and/or Work Experience: Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in general business, business management, finance, or a related field; plus three years of experience in fiscal related experience. Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements.
Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: Accounting experience and/or experience working in higher education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:
- Knowledge of general accounting practices and procedures.
- Must be proficient in both Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to apply knowledge base comprehensively.
- Ability to compile information and prepare reports.
- Ability to provide technical assistance to system users.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reconciles and prepares the monthly payment of all payroll benefits paid to the System Office.
- Reconciles payroll bank statements.
- Reconciles trustee (bond) statements.
- Prepares sales and use tax reports and related journal entries.
- Reconciles flexible benefits and health claims accounts.
- Performs surprise counts on all cash tills.
- Prepares and submits the information needed for Form 1095-C reporting.
- Prepares the information needed for Form 1042 reporting.
- Assists with year-end closing functions.
- Cross-trains with and provides backup support for other team members as assigned.
- Serves as backup for keying of supplier invoices.
- Performs various accounting duties, other reconciliations, and reviews.
- Handles inquiries for general financial information.
- Prepares and analyzes reports from data within area of responsibility.
Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.
- Maintains strong working relationship with faculty and staff.
- Contributes to the overall success of the department by performing all other duties as requested or assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates. Requires consistent on-time attendance.
Additional Information:
Working Relationships: The Accountant I has frequent contact with university employees, human resources personnel, third party benefits administrators, auditors, and peers regarding general ledger data, entries, and adjustments.
List Employees Supervised: Employee has no direct subordinates, but in the capacity of performing cash counts, provides input and direction to Cashier’s Office and other departments on campus.
Special Job Dimensions: Work performed primarily in an office setting. Occasional travel and extended hours required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee frequently sits for extended periods of time, and occasionally stands and walks. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee regularly talks and hears. Employee occasionally lifts items up to ten pounds..
