Summary of Job Duties:

The primary objective of the Director of Sponsored Student and Special Programs is to ensure that program goals meet the ever-changing needs and requirements of international students who are sponsored. In addition to meeting the sponsor’s requirements, the Director is required to work within the rules of the Graduate School and International Education (GSIE), the University, the State, and the Federal Government. The Director reports to the Associate Dean for International Education within GSIE and works in concert with other GSIE Directors and campus officials.

The Office of Sponsored Student and Special Programs facilitates the recruitment, admission, support and repatriation of sponsored students, custom programs as nondegree students, and visiting exchange students at the University of Arkansas. The Director will recruit sponsored students working with sponsoring agencies, institutions, ministries, and countries. As part of these recruitment efforts, the Director will host and visit with government and non-government sponsors in the U.S. and abroad. The Director will also work with campus units to develop custom programs to attract nondegree seeking students and scholars. Finally, the Director will support the work of reciprocal exchange programs hosting visiting students.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty. In addition, the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others is imperative.


Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited university or college

  • At least five years of professional experience in foreign sponsored student and scholar advising and/or exchange programs

  • At least three years of leadership experience managing personnel and resources in international education programs


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree from an accredited university or college

  • Experience working abroad

  • Experience which demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of United States visa laws, rules, and regulations

  • A demonstrated commitment to the holistic development of diverse student populations

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of business and management principles related to strategic planning, resource allocation, and coordination of people and resources

  • Knowledge of computer software, database management, and student information systems

  • Knowledge of regulations from the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security, State, and Labor pertaining to F, J, H1B, and employment based permanent residence

  • Knowledge of university organization

  • Skills in leadership and personnel management in a collaborative and creative environment

  • Skill in cross-cultural communication, advising, and counseling

  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems

  • Skill in talking to others to convey information effectively with advanced verbal and written communication

  • Ability to lead staff in a creative and collaborative environment

  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively in an office setting

  • Abilities in proposal development and grant writing

  • Ability to confidently represent the University in a professional manner

  • Ability to professionally handle difficult and stressful situations


Additional Information:


Salary Information:

$60,000 - $65,000 Commensurate with education and experience.
