Summary of Job Duties:

The McDermott Livestock Entomology Lab at the University of Arkansas (https://www.mcdermottlabuark.com/) seeks to fill a Research Assistant position to support research on the surveillance of emerging vector-borne and infectious diseases as part of the Remote Emerging Disease Intelligence-Network (REDI-NET) Consortium (https://redi-net.nd.edu/). The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the lab, including ordering and managing supplies, entering data, writing reports, and supervising undergraduate students and hourly workers. The candidate will also conduct standardized laboratory assays, including DNA/RNA extraction and PCR, to support ongoing research efforts in the lab.
This is a temporary position and may be renewable dependent on performance and availability of funding. The expected start date for the position is October 1st 2023, but is negotiable.


Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications:

  • BS in biology, entomology, molecular biology, or a related field
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred qualifications (be as specific as you can to ensure candidates with the right qualifications):

  • Experience with basic molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR/qPCR, and gel electrophoresis
  • Experience working in BSL-2/ACL-2 conditions
  • Experience collecting and managing data sets
  • Experience identifying insects/ticks to species using dichotomous keys, particularly medically relevant species
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Training in entomology, vector biology, microbiology, and/or epidemiology
