Senior Manager, Transportation — Rail & International

Summary

The Senior Manager, Transportation — Rail & International is responsible for leading the strategic management of the rail and international transportation networks supporting refrigerated and ambient shipments. This role provides leadership oversight for freight allocation, equipment utilization, carrier performance, customer delivery execution, cost control, and network efficiency across assigned transportation modes. The position balances service, cost, capacity, and operational execution to maintain strong on-time delivery performance while minimizing overall transportation expenses.

This role leads team members responsible for rail and international transportation strategy and is expected to develop people, improve processes, resolve complex operational issues, and build effective carrier and cross-functional partnerships. Work is performed in a fast-paced environment requiring frequent prioritization, problem-solving, and coordination across internal teams, customers, carriers, and external business partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the rail and international transportation functions, ensuring effective execution of freight movement, carrier management, customer delivery requirements, and equipment utilization.

  • Provide direct leadership, coaching, and development for managers and team members responsible for transportation network execution.

  • Balance cost and service objectives by optimizing load assignments, lane commitments, freight allocation, and carrier utilization across assigned networks.

  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying and eliminating network inefficiencies, improving operational processes, and supporting scalable transportation solutions.

  • Monitor transportation performance, cost trends, carrier service, and resource utilization to ensure business objectives are met.

  • Partner with procurement, operations, customer service, supply chain, sales, finance, carriers, and other internal and external stakeholders to support effective transportation execution.

  • Support cost control efforts by evaluating transportation spend, identifying savings opportunities, improving asset utilization, and ensuring resources are deployed effectively.

  • Lead team member development, performance management, workload prioritization, and succession planning within the assigned transportation functions.

  • Ensure transportation decisions support customer service expectations, on-time delivery performance, safety, compliance, and overall supply chain objectives.

  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs.

Leadership Scope

This position serves as a leader over the rail and international strategy roles and is accountable for aligning both functions under a coordinated operating strategy. The Senior Manager is expected to set direction, remove barriers, develop talent, strengthen cross-functional execution, and ensure both areas operate with consistent service expectations, disciplined cost management, and effective carrier engagement.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.

Experience: 5 or more years of transportation, logistics, supply chain, or related experience preferred, with experience leading people, managing carrier relationships, and resolving complex operational issues. Rail, international/ocean transportation, refrigerated transportation, or food supply chain experience.

Computer/Technology Skills: Advanced computer skills required; experience with data analytics, AI integration, transportation management systems, reporting tools, QTS, and legacy applications preferred.

Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills required, including the ability to influence stakeholders, negotiate solutions, and communicate effectively with internal teams, customers, and carrier partners.

Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead teams, develop talent, prioritize work, manage performance, solve problems, and drive accountability in a fast-paced transportation environment.
