Scott Family Amazeum Overview

The Scott Family Amazeum is a hands-on, interactive museum in Northwest Arkansas and recognized as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. We create a fun environment where risk taking, imagining, problem solving, discovery, collaboration, and exploration bring children and adults together to learn and grow.

Core Purpose: The Amazeum exists to spark and nurture the curious and creative spirit in all of us.

Through experiences with the Amazeum, individuals and the community are engaged in building relationships and developing identities as creative, curious, and innovative shapers for the region. Learning at the Amazeum is an active, playful exploration that inspires curiosity. It is rooted in inquiry-based discovery and involves an element of risk. Hands-on learning opportunities allow guests to exercise critical thinking in the context of play.

The Amazeum facility includes approximately 50,000 square feet of indoor space and one acre of outdoor exhibition and activity space. The museum is located at the intersection of Museum Way and J Street in Bentonville, AR.

Position Summary

The Store Manager is responsible for managing the daily operations of the museum store and online retail experience. This role oversees retail strategy, merchandising, team leadership, and product sourcing to ensure profitability and mission alignment. The position requires strong collaboration with guest experience, marketing, and education teams, and involves inventory control, and the development of unique museum retail offerings. This position reports to the Sr Manager Retail Operations.

Essential Functions

  • Manage daily operations of the museum store and online shop, ensuring a positive, mission-aligned guest experience
  • Lead all operational retail functions including, merchandising, inventory management, and team development
  • Hire, schedule, train, and supervise Retail Associates and Specialists to create a high-performing, guest-focused team
  • Work on the sales floor regularly to model exceptional service and hands-on leadership
  • Apply critical thinking and sound judgment to daily decisions, guest service issues, and team supervision
  • Plan and prioritize daily and long-term tasks for self and team to ensure smooth operations across staffing, merchandising, inventory, and events.
  • Use data, trends, and sales reports to guide pricing, and promotional strategy
  • Identify and resolve operational challenges quickly, adapting to changing needs with minimal supervision
  • Facilitate team meetings, communicate shift goals clearly, and follow up to ensure accountability
  • Create visually engaging displays that support sales goals and enhance the guest experience
  • Communicate professionally and clearly with guests, vendors, team members, and other museum departments
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing, Guest Services, and Education to align retail goals with museum initiatives
  • Develop and manage budgets for store operations and birthday retail programming
  • Source, evaluate, and purchase mission-aligned products with a focus on local makers and unique guest offerings
  • Develop and lead retail components of the birthday party program, including staff training and product curation
  • Maintain accurate inventory levels and ordering processes to support profitability and minimize overstock
  • Capture and report performance metrics including sales, guest feedback, and team impact stories
  • Participate in museum-wide events, meetings, and planning efforts as a collaborative team member

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in retail management, or merchandising
  • 6+ mos. experience managing budgets, analyzing financial data, and meeting sales goals
  • 6+ mos. proven track record in inventory and vendor management
  • Proficiency with retail POS systems, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Available to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed

  • Complete and pass a background check

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours), including on concrete floors
  • Must be able to regularly lift, carry, and move up to 40 pounds unassisted (e.g., boxes of inventory, display materials)
  • Occasionally lift and move heavier items (up to 60 pounds) with assistance or using tools such as carts or dollies
  • Must have full range of motion including frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, reaching overhead, and climbing short ladders or step stools to stock and merchandise products
  • Requires visual acuity to review pricing, signage, inventory labels, and displays at various distances
  • Requires manual dexterity to operate point-of-sale systems, computers, mobile devices, and tagging tools
  • Must be able to hear and communicate clearly in a retail setting with ambient noise from guests and background music
  • May work in environments with fluctuating indoor/outdoor temperatures (e.g., receiving dock, outdoor events)
  • Occasionally required to push or pull carts and lift totes during restocking or event setup
  • Must be able to remain focused and maintain situational awareness in a dynamic, guest-facing environment
  • Ability to work in an environment with moderate to excessive noise levels

Preferred Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Bilingual
  • Experience in museum retail or non-profit retail environment
  • Knowledge of visual merchandising techniques
  • Familiarity with retail business planning or retail analytics tools
  • Passion for working in a playful, curiosity-driven environment
