Reading and Writing Specialist

Position Summary

Responsible for providing individual and small group instruction for students who want to improve reading comprehension or writing skills. Part of TRIO – Student Support Services program, a federally funded grant program that serves low-income and first-generation college students and college students with disabilities. Position is 29 hours/week for 10 months (August – May).

Role Qualifications

  • Strong ability to create good will with staff, faculty, parents, and students.
  • Self-motivated; servant attitude.
  • Commitment to the Articles of Faith, Mission, and Objectives of the University; and desires to be a role model for students by demonstrating an active Christian faith in personal example and in work related responsibilities.

Position Responsibilities

  • Instructs individual students in reading and writing skills and strategies.
  • Administers and evaluates reading diagnostic tests.
  • Coordinates assessment process for new students.
  • Assists Director in evaluating student eligibility, selecting program participants, managing participant Individual Success Plans, and evaluating progress of participants.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with other SSS staff regarding student concerns.
  • Refers students to other SSS and campus services as necessary.
  • Meets with SSS participants on a regular basis.
  • Other duties as assigned, including reports and appropriate professional development.

Essential skills and experience

  • Experience in reading instruction.
  • Experience in writing instruction.
  • Skills in one-on-one and small group tutoring.
  • Well-developed communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Personal organizational skills.
  • Presentation skills for seminars and workshops.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Preferred skills and experience

  • Minimum one year experience in higher education preferred
  • Minimum two years experience working with students with disabilities, low-income students, or first generation students.
  • Persons from backgrounds similar to program participants.

Education

Master’s degree preferred in Reading/Writing or closely related field.

Physical demands and work environment

  • Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk; stand; sit; use hands; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.

The employee is expected to adhere to all University policies.
