We’re looking for a Fire Protection Engineer II who’s eager to expand their project leadership skills, mentor others, and contribute to complex and meaningful work across the country.


What You’ll Do

As a Fire Protection Engineer II at HFA, you’ll lead or support a wide range of commercial, industrial, and retail projects from concept through construction. You’ll collaborate with other engineers and architects to deliver coordinated, code-compliant systems that perform when it matters most.

In this role, you will:

  • Independently manage multiple projects and client types with minimal supervision.

  • Lead small client teams (1–5 staff) or oversee portions of large-scale projects.

  • Design and draft fire suppression, alarm, and life safety systems, including riser diagrams, underground piping, and smoke control systems.

  • Apply NFPA, IBC, and IFC codes to ensure full compliance and system performance.

  • Perform hydraulic calculations, equipment selection, and specification writing.

  • Collaborate directly with clients, internal engineers, and project teams.

  • Train and mentor junior staff on company standards, software, and design best practices.

  • Provide quality control reviews and assist with project budgets and documentation.

You’ll have opportunities to serve as Engineer of Record on select projects (with director approval) and take increasing ownership of client relationships and design quality.


What You’ll Bring

  • BS in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering (or equivalent experience)

  • 3+ years of experience designing fire protection or alarm systems

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required

  • Proficiency in AutoSprink, Revit, and related design software

  • Strong understanding of NFPA, ICC, IBC, and IFC codes

  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset

  • Ability to independently solve complex design challenges and deliver detailed construction documents

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work in an independent manner on several projects and/or client types with minimal supervision from a more Senior Fire Protection Engineer and/or Fire Protection Design Lead. Engineer should be able to communicate with client, deliver completed construction documents, and assist in construction administration as required for most project types.
  • Ability to lead a small client/client team (1-5 staff), medium to large scale projects, or portions of a large project utilizing their experience and education in Fire Suppression and/or Fire alarm systems, controls, and knowledge of national standards
  • Engineer should utilize education and experience to independently develop, implement, and draft construction documents for most projects (or at least major portions), as well as, solve most design challenges that arise.
  • Apply their knowledge gained through experience and knowledge of recognized national standards for most project types, with minimal oversight from a more Senior Engineer or Fire Protection Design Team Lead.
  • Engineer should have a thorough knowledge of software assisting programs, such as AutoSPRINK and be able to apply throughout the design process. Engineer should have a proficient understanding of NFPA/ICC codes and how it impacts design.
  • Engineer should be able to design and draft fire suppression, fire alarm, fire protection underground supply piping systems, including riser diagrams, for most project types.
  • Engineer should have proficient knowledge of life safety codes / standards and be able to apply towards the design of life safety documents.

Job Duties:

  • Engineer should be proficient in AutoSPRINK and REVIT. Engineer should be able to train new employees on company standards, drafting techniques, and answer most technical design questions on most projects for Fire Suppression and Alarm, as well as, life safety and smoke control systems. Engineer should possess a good understanding of national standards (IBC, IFC, NFPA).
  • Engineer will work in a collaborative environment with Architects and other Engineers to develop construction documents based on a clients' requirements, including performing some project management functions, quality control, or other duties as necessary.
  • Engineer should be able to provide a high level of quality control on all of their own projects as well as others, for final review by a more Senior Engineer or Fire Protection Design Lead.
  • Engineer should be able to select and design fire suppression/alarm systems and equipment, controls and provide hydraulic calculations with minimal supervision on most systems.
  • Engineer could have direct client contact, unless in a strictly technical role.
  • Engineer will work with Fire Protection Design Lead to establish project budgets, if requested, and be able to work within budgets.
  • Engineer should be able to write specifications for most project types.
  • Engineer could serve as the Engineer of Record, with approval from Director or Executive, on most projects or roll-out clients.

Education Requirements: BSME, BS Fire Engineering - 3+ years of experience in fire alarm design
