Position summary

The Medical Assistant assists in patient care under the direction of the clinicians and Nurses and provides administrative support for patients as needed. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with the care and the administrative components of the role. Candidate with bilingual (Spanish/English) ability preferred.

Essential job functions

  • Maintains patient flow during clinic so as to assure prompt service for patients.
  • Obtains vital signs, measurements and laboratory tests accurately, as per protocol.
  • Obtains chief complaint and reason for visit using excellent listening skills.
  • Assists as requested by provider in procedures and examinations within guidelines of certification and/or training.
  • Coordinates communication for scheduling of procedures
  • Translates written and verbal communication between patient and providers, nurses or ancillary staff, as requested by either the patient or staff and as skills allow
  • Ensures patient information is entered into the electronic medical record (EMR) accurately and updated regularly for all patients.
  • Ensures patient payments are collected, posted correctly to accounts and collections are balanced daily.
  • Coordinates with Patient Financial Services on required patient information in the EMR, payments and insurance inquiries.
  • Schedules patient appointments appropriately, based on patient needs, provider requests and approved scheduling guidelines.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work environment to ensure the professional appearance of the Clinic at all times.
  • Keeps management team informed of all activities and on goings in the medical clinic.
  • Collaborates professionally with referral sources and ensure courteous communication.
  • Adheres to all applicable regulations and guidelines, including HIPAA/HITECH, CLIA, HRSA, NCQA PCMH, and OSHA.
  • Participates in meetings, training sessions, and workshops, including overnight or air travel when required.
  • Assists with additional patient care, clinic maintenance, or process improvement tasks as assigned.

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Medical Assistant certification
  • 1+ year of health care experience

Preferred qualifications

  • Spanish/English bilingual ability
  • Experience working in a clinic, especially a community health center
  • Registered Medical Assistant
  • Experience in customer service

Essential competencies

  • Proficient spelling necessary.
  • Ability to work and function independently and within a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with people of all backgrounds.
  • Proficient knowledge in computer software such as Microsoft Office.
  • Able to perform proficiently on current practice management system and/or electronic medical records.

Physical demands

  • Able to stand and walk for as much as 8 to 9 hours in a day.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend and stretch in order to retrieve supplies and operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to lift, hold and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate and respond to inquiries both in person and over the phone.
  • Ability to operate a PC / laptop and other office equipment.

Safety Sensitive Position

  • As provided in Amendment 98, sections 2 and 3 of the Arkansas Constitution, Community Clinic has designated this position as safety sensitive. Under Arkansas’s Medical Marijuana law, the Clinic may take adverse employment action on the sole basis of a positive marijuana drug test against an employee with a valid medical marijuana card working in a safety sensitive position.
