Description

The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and appearance of the museum’s exterior spaces; development and implementation of ongoing grounds care and maintenance plan; assisting the Director with strategic planning and establishing priorities for grounds maintenance and improvements; supervising Master Gardeners and other grounds volunteers.

Job Duties

  • Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers; maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Perform other duties as required or assigned.
  • This position does not have direct reports, however may be required to periodically train and direct up to twenty volunteers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws.
Grounds Care and Maintenance
  • Construct, plant, and maintain flower beds and heritage garden.
  • Care for lawn, including mowing, seeding, fertilizing, and watering on a routine and appropriate basis.
  • Water, prune, and shape shrubs and trees.
  • Maintain outdoor pathways, parking lots, sidewalks, signs, and exterior lighting.
  • Perform light rock work and carpentry as needed or appropriate.
  • Sweep and shovel walks and staff parking lot.
  • Maintain an inventory of all tools, groundskeeping equipment, and sprinkler systems.
  • Monitor and problem solve for animal, bird, and insect problems on grounds; assist the Collections Manager by following the museum integrated pest management plan.
  • Clean and maintain building or outdoor spaces as assigned, including the spring house, doctor’s office, outhouse, general store, and cabin.
  • Oversee vendors and contractors doing work on museum grounds.
  • Assist the Director with security planning and monitoring.
  • Collaborate with city personnel on projects and knowledge sharing where needed.
  • Use and assist with care for city-owned greenhouse.
Public Programming and Volunteers
  • Supervise and work with all grounds volunteers, including the Master Gardeners.
  • Collaborate with the Development and Volunteer Manager to collect and maintain volunteer records and support volunteer appreciation and recognition programs and events.
  • Assist staff and volunteers in identifying appropriate projects and volunteer tasks for groups and individuals.
  • Assist the Program Manager with developing and participating in programs relevant to horticulture and the environment.
  • Greet the public in buildings and on grounds and answer questions.
  • Work closely with and assist staff members in providing appropriate set up for programs, meetings, special events, after-hours programming, and other functions on museum property or sponsored by the museum at other locations.
  • Assist program staff with programs and with student supervision when appropriate.
  • Schedule duties around museum tours and events as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with formal training in horticulture, botany, or landscaping; five or more years of experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or similar work environment; sufficient experience to have extensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in all phases of grounds maintenance.
  • Must possess a valid Arkansas Driver’s License.
  • Must be proficient in use of lawn mower, tiller, weed trimmer, edger, leaf blower, chain saw, and basic gardening tools.
  • Must be able to operate a personal computer and create, maintain and update computer programs (spreadsheet, word processing, and database) relative to the work required.
  • Ability to utilize both internal and external resources to obtain information and data necessary to carry out routine assignments and special projects.
  • Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, staff, volunteers, external agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to work on one’s feet for most of day and manually operate equipment such as buffers, lawnmowers, etc.
  • Working knowledge of safety procedures and OSHA requirements.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize; ability to be self-motivated and flexible; attention to detail; ability to work in team-oriented environment; ability to communicate effectively.
  • Belief in the mission, vision, and values of Shiloh Museum of Ozark History; ability to multitask and problem solve; ability to work in a team-oriented environment; and ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
