SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the Distribution Foreman and supervision of the Distribution Superintendent, this individual is a member of a crew working in the water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems owned, operated, and maintained by the City of Siloam Springs. Persons employed in this position are responsible for making sure health and safety measures are executed.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of material, methods, and techniques used in construction, maintenance and repair activities as related to assigned areas of specialization
  • Knowledgeable in generally accepted standards and techniques used in the operation and maintenance of water distribution and sanitary sewer systems
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and tools
  • Ability to meet schedules and time lines
  • Demonstrate the ability to work safely and efficiently
  • Demonstrate ability to understand and interpret verbal and written instructions, and read documents such as safety rules and operating instructions
  • Capable of maintaining an effective working relationship with fellow employees and work courteously and tactfully with the public and co-workers

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

Actively participates in duties of a high-performance team assigned to maintain, upgrade, and expand the utility’s water distribution system and the sanitary sewer collection system. Work assignments include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Operate utility equipment units, such as backhoe/loader, dump truck, hydraulic jet (flush) truck, vac truck, rodder, and tools such as tapping machine, jackhammer, acetylene torch, welder, pipe saw, trash pump and air compressor, assorted hand tool and power tools to perform any operation within the capacity of the equipment and as necessary to accomplish the job required
  • Locating and repair of water leaks
  • Analyzing and correcting low-pressure services
  • Repairing, replacing and providing maintenance on water mains, valves, meter services, fire hydrants and other water system appurtenances
  • Locating and repairing all breaks and stoppages in sewer mains and lateral lines
  • Cleaning, repairing, and replacement of sewer mains and manholes
  • Adjusting valve boxes and manhole lids to proper grade
  • Construction of water and sewer line extensions, installing new meter services and sewer taps, hydrants, valves and manholes
  • Clean, service, and maintain all vehicles, equipment, and tools assigned to the crew
  • Assist with housekeeping, cleaning, and maintenance of workplace facilities
  • When called upon, assist other City divisions in the maintenance and minor construction of the facilities for which they are responsible
  • Perform other duties and special assignments as directed by superiors

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents. Ability to listen, learn and communicate effectively with peers and public. Ability to make sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts related to construction, water distribution, and sewer collection. The ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, angles, proportions, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables, meaning variables that can be perceived through senses, and variables of quality such as knowledge and perception levels. Ability to apply common sense understanding of a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Must obtain a Class I Distribution License within 12 months of employment. Must hold a valid Class I Arkansas Collection System License12 months of employment.

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

*Weather Essential position includes employees are declared to be all sworn police officers, all sworn firefighters, dispatchers, emergency road crew employees in the Street Department, and electrical personnel in the Electric Department.
