SUMMARY

The Operator, Transfer Station, is primarily responsible for changing out containers in the Transfer Station staging area and at businesses. Take calls for tank orders and missed stops. Fill in for drivers or collectors on all trash routes as needed. Maintain the cleanliness of the transfer station and grounds. Additional driving and working responsibilities could be assigned to other divisions within the Solid Waste Division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Change out containers in the yard when full and clean up the area around the containers.
  2. Check loads of trash brought in by the public, calculate fees for dumping and assist with unloading.
  3. Fill in for drivers/collectors on routes as needed. Assist in changing out other containers throughout the city.
  4. Take phone calls from the public for complaints, requests, tank orders or missed stops and route other drivers.
  5. Performs daily maintenance clean up around assigned work areas and transfer station.
  6. Operates heavy equipment.
  7. May be required to assist with random load inspection of materials brought to the transfer station.
  8. Sort recyclable materials into proper storage areas for collection and staging for transport to recycling area.
  9. May be required to sort hazardous materials such as paint, batteries, white goods, oil, and other such materials for safe storage and proper disposal.
  10. Performs unskilled manual labor, as necessary, in a variety of maintenance and construction projects within the Solid Waste Department.
  11. Keeps records and submits reports on work performed.
  12. Keeps inventory of tank changes, trucks dumped, etc.
  13. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school degree or GED and one-year certificate from college or technical school; or twelve to eighteen months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardizations exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (if required)

Must hold a valid driver’s license, Class B (CDL) preferred and a Journeyman- Class 1C Arkansas Solid Waste Facility Operator License, master’s is preferred.

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat and cold and wet or humid conditions (non-weather related). The incumbent works in high precarious places, near moving mechanical parts, is at risk of electrical shock and/or vibration. The incumbent is exposed to fumes and airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
