General Description

The Recreation Fitness Manager plays a key role by developing and leading high-quality fitness and wellness opportunities for the community. This position is responsible for the overall operation of fitness programs and facilities, supervision of staff, and delivery of services that promote health, wellness, and community engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Plan, implement, and evaluate a variety of fitness and wellness programs for youth, adults, and seniors.

2. Oversee daily operations of the fitness center including staffing, cleanliness, safety, and equipment maintenance. Ensure facilities are clean, safe, welcoming, and well-maintained. Recruit, train, supervise, schedule, and support part-time staff and instructors.

3. Maintain recreation software systems and mobile applications to ensure accurate program information and registration. Maintain accurate records, reports, and program data. Assist with membership engagement and retention strategies.

4. Plan, schedule, and evaluate group exercise offerings based on participation trends and community needs, monitor class participation, and adjust schedules to improve utilization and service quality. Ensure instructors maintain required certifications and risk-management standards.

5. Support & promote membership growth through expanding offerings & increasing participation. Ensure programs are accessible, inclusive, and aligned with community needs and interests.

6. Manage and update the department website with current and relevant content. Support front-line staff with fitness-related member questions and concerns.

7. Assist with budget development and monitor program revenues and expenditures.

8. Build partnerships with local organizations, schools, and health providers.

  • Responsibilities For Work Of Others: Supervises a SMALL GROUP (3-7) of employees, usually of LOWER CLASSIFICATIONS. Assigns and checks work; assists and instructs as required and performs same work as those supervised, or closely related work, a portion of the time. Content of the work supervised is of a non-technical nature, but presents numerous situations to which policies and precedents must be interpreted and applied.
  • Responsibility For Funds, Equipment, Property, Etc.: OCCASIONALLY responsible for organization's property where carelessness, error, or misappropriation would result in MODERATE damage or MODERATE monetary loss to the organization. The total value for the above would range from $5,000 to $150,000.

Education And Experience

  • Education: Four year college degree, or equivalent experience resulting in broad knowledge of a field related to the job, such as accounting, marketing, business administration, agriculture etc.
  • Experience General: 5 years related experience and/or training.
  • Experience Management: 3 years related management experience.
