Essential Job Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Note: All City of Fayetteville positions require employees to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Other essential duties of this position include the following:

  1. Develop and maintain comprehensive content calendar to raise public awareness of City news, projects, and information.
  2. Execute content and tactics as scheduled on the content calendar across City communication channels, including social media platforms, email communications, website updates, and multimedia content such as written, visual, and video assets.
  3. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships across multiple City departments; provide thoughtful, actionable, and proactive guidance and support to City departments.
  4. Collaborate with supervisor and associated staff to achieve strategic communications, marketing, and public relations goals and objectives.
  5. Respond quickly and reliably to emergency communication needs, including those falling outside of normal working hours, on weekends, holidays, etc.
  6. Write, edit, and publish media releases that follow City best practices, protocols, and brand standards.
  7. Create assets and materials to effectively promote City news, information, and events to the public. This may include print materials, photos, video, graphics, flyers, posters, signs, questionnaires, mailers, and more.
  8. Serve as the City’s lead resource on social media platforms and best practices, staying current on trends, tools, and emerging issues. Provide guidance and support to departments on effective use of social media, and contribute insights to inform Citywide social media approaches and policies. Monitor comments and messages on the City’s social channels and provide timely, helpful and respectful responses; escalate issues and concerns to appropriate department leadership for awareness and response where needed.
  9. Oversee work contracted to external vendors where necessary. Work directly with vendors and other materials producers to ensure quality, timeliness, and on-budget delivery of work. This includes ensuring appropriate uses of the City’s official seal, logo, emblems, and graphics.
  10. Prepare and/or edit talking points, statements, reports, presentations, and other materials as needed to support City administration and staff needs.
  11. Assist with adding and updating content on the City’s website, intranet, and SpeakUp site.
  12. Assist with providing responses to media inquiries and requests.
  13. Exercise good judgment, professionalism, and decision-making; manage time efficiently and adapt to varying levels of supervision and direction.
  14. Provide City committee staffing and support as assigned.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, or related field with five years of relevant experience in public relations, strategic communications, or a related field, including experience supporting organizational communications across multiple departments or stakeholders.
  2. Prefer experience managing social media for an organization or brand.
    Prefer ability to create or edit graphics and visual assets through current design software.
  3. Prefer experience capturing and editing photo and video content for digital platforms.
  4. Possess a valid driver’s license.
  5. Must successfully pass criminal background check, including but not limited to convictions, guilty pleas, or no contest pleas to violent offenses, theft offenses and any offense under A.C.A. § 21-15-103.
  6. Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
  7. Demonstrated proficiency in professional writing, proofreading, and content editing, with an excellent command of grammar.
  8. Demonstrated experience creating content for multiple audiences and channels.
  9. Proficient with existing social media channels and tools; ability to become proficient in new and emerging channels and tools.
  10. Ability to use or learn to use content management systems for website content updates.
  11. Ability to effectively operate standard office equipment.
  12. Ability to work outside of regular business hours on an occasional basis, including evenings and weekends, to support operational needs, as well as during weather events, disasters, or other emergencies.
  13. This position must comply with standards and certifications for access to the City’s technology infrastructure as specified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Criminal Justice Information System.
  14. Must have physical abilities to communicate effectively with others verbally (including on the telephone) and in writing; and understand others’ communications, both verbal and in writing. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; move from location to location; use hands to finger, handle or feel; manipulate computer keyboard; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities to accomplish computer and office work. Frequent light lifting and carrying of up to 10 pounds. Occasional lifting and carrying of up to 20 pounds.
