Essential Job Duties

Safety/Security Sensitive Designation:

This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment.

  1. Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
  2. Perform supervisory responsibilities which may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City’s policies and applicable laws.
  3. Supervision of all emergency and non-emergency operations during a shift. Responsible for maintaining readiness and staffing for fire department personnel and enforcement of City and Department policies and procedures.
  4. This position is responsible to perform job duties in an accurate manner in order to protect the health and safety of the citizens of the City of Fayetteville.
  5. Emergency scene management - incident command for single company, multi-company and multi-jurisdictional responses.
  6. Manage all aspects of response and deployment and logistics.
  7. Facilitate needed communications between shift personnel and administration.
  8. Oversight for proper operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment.
  9. Oversee completion of and takes part in training exercises and officer development at the company level.
  10. Evaluate effectiveness of groups and individuals and adjust/train as required
  11. Oversee special projects, equipment evaluation, and program development.
  12. Regularly participate in either group or self-directed physical fitness activities.
  13. May be assigned as a Shift Commander and manage a Battalion.
  14. May be assigned as the Fire Marshal and manage the Fire Prevention Bureau.
  15. May be assigned as the Chief of Training and manage the Training Division
  16. May be assigned as the Chief of Planning and manage the Planning Division.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

Secondary Job Duties

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus completion of at least eight (8) years of continuous service with the Fayetteville Fire Department immediately preceding the date of the written promotional examination and has successfully attained and held the rank of Fire Captain with the Fayetteville Fire Department for three (3) continuous years immediately preceding the date of the written promotional examination. A transcript from an accredited institution documenting a minimum of twelve (12) hours of completed college coursework with at least a “C” average may substitute for a high school diploma or GED certificate. After December 31, 2023 an Associate’s Degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university will be required.
  2. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  3. Necessary certificates, licenses and registrations include: IFSAC Firefighter I & II, and must maintain EMT certification.
  4. Ability to react quickly and effectively in all emergencies, natural or man-caused disasters.
  5. Must be proficient in the use of a computer and other related software programs. Must be able to effectively operate standard office equipment.
  6. Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
  7. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  8. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  9. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is exposed to extremes in weather conditions; possible injury while riding on emergency vehicles or operating department equipment; hazards inherent to fire, hazardous materials, special rescue scene situations and emergency medical incidents. The noise level in the working environment is frequently loud. Mental stress generated by involvement in life and death situations; cardiovascular stress generated by movement from resting to highly active states.
