Essential Job Duties

- Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
- Design the necessary modifications and/or new construction of public works including water, sewer, drainage and street projects within City, County, State and Federal guidelines, under the guidance of a Staff Engineer. This task requires frequently solving problems requiring engineering knowledge and skills.
- Review plans and specification for site plans, subdivision plats and other development submittals for conformance with design standards, ordinances and other City requirements as assigned, under the guidance of a Staff Engineer.
- Prepare plans, specifications and contract documents for project designs for review and approval by a Registered Professional Engineer including reducing field notes from surveyors, importing data points, developing base drawings, TINs and contours, developing alignments, profiles and cross sections
- Perform research for materials, specifications and details for products and methods used in design projects.
- Provide project management assistance for ongoing Public Works Projects including consultant management and record keeping.
- Attend planning commission meetings, city council and other public meetings as directed by management staff.
- Coordinate reviews with other departments, utility companies and other agencies.
- Investigate complaints from citizens regarding City infrastructure and requests for assistance. Coordinate with other City departments in resolving complaints and problems.
- Provide onsite project inspection to provide visual review of Public Works Projects under construction.
- Prepare and deliver presentations and reports at public meetings including but not limited to Planning Commission, City Council and City Council Committees when assigned.
- Assist the City Engineer with special projects as assigned. Draft updates to City Code and/or City standards and manuals. Prepare Master Plan Updates for transportation, sidewalks, and drainage programs.
- Assist engineers, contractors, builders, governmental agencies and others with requests for design criteria and standards, construction details and City requirements for public works facilities.
- Attend biweekly staff meetings and other meetings with engineers, surveyors and land agents as required.
Secondary Job Duties

- Serve as a backup to provide onsite project inspection for city public works projects under construction.
- Perform secondary duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an engineering program that is (or that is equivalent to one) accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
- Must have, or be eligible to apply for, an Engineer Intern/Engineer-In-Training designation.
- Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
- Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to management, public groups and/or boards of directors.
- Must be proficient in the use of a computer. Experience with engineering computer programs for design of drainage, streets and water is preferred.
- While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
- Must be able to walk over rough terrain, pre-construction and construction sites and excavated areas.
