Safety/Security Sensitive Designation:
This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment and is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Note: All City of Fayetteville supervisory positions require employees to demonstrate leadership competencies by exhibiting appropriate role modeling, and setting proper examples. In addition, all City of Fayetteville positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Other essential duties of this position include the following:
- Perform supervisory responsibilities which may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City’s policies and applicable laws.
- Road test and inspect units to identify needed repairs. Perform road tests and final inspections of completed work to ensure all phases of preventive and corrective maintenance have been completed to established standards.
- Repair vehicles or equipment within the capability of the Division.
- Must maintain current knowledge of software programs and be able to diagnose and trouble shoot the following engines and transmissions: Cat, Mack, Navistar, Cummins, Ford, GM, Chrysler and Allison. These programs will be available through computer-based training, testing and certification.
- Assist supervisor in assigning work within the shop to ensure minimum turnaround time for scheduled repairs and inspections to meet daily service standards.
- Coordinate and adjust schedules for periodic routine preventive maintenance for all City vehicles.
- Participate in and instruct shop staff in the more difficult mechanical work such as rebuilding diesel combustion engines, transmissions, or other major repair work, and troubleshooting components, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
- Assist shop staff and perform welding and fabrication repairs such as truck and equipment frames and bodies, pipes and tanks, and similar items using oxyacetylene torches, mig, and stick welding.
- Train new employees to properly maintain vehicles or equipment. Ensure proper procedures are being followed and equipment is being properly used.
- Keep records of time and parts used in repairs, complete work orders and technical reports of weekly work activities for the assigned unit and for use by supervisor.
- Evaluate the need for replacement parts and place requests for parts with the Fleet Warehouse.
- Assist Fleet Warehouse in determining stocking level and keeping adequate parts and supplies in stock.
- Assist supervisor in acquiring estimates for outside labor and recommend shops for outside repair. This requires on-site inspection of potential vendors along with an evaluation of their capabilities.
- Assist in maintaining an inventory control system for tools and shop equipment to prevent losses and ensure adequate supplies for completing daily work assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or GED and eight years of related experience or completion of automotive trade school or applicable manufacturer’s level training and six years of related experience.
2. Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
3. Must obtain and maintain Master ASE certification within 16 months of hire.
4. Must have two years of related experience welding and fabricating a wide variety of metal parts.
5. Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
6. Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and operation of a repair shop engaged in repair of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, automotive maintenance repair and testing, operating and preventive maintenance requirements of light and heavy equipment and vehicles, operation of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic circuits and components, and their function and operation.
7. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of heavy-duty mechanical maintenance and repair work, and availability and proper use of safety equipment and supplies.
8. Skill in the care and use of tools for all phases of heavy-duty mechanical maintenance and repair work; use of special diagnostic and mechanical adjustment equipment; and ability to operate various types of vehicles and equipment.
9. Ability to operate a computer and specialized fleet management software.
10. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
11. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of vibration; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
