Essential Job Duties
  1. Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of his or her own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
  2. Perform competent legal research utilizing Lexis or Westlaw, including shepardizing cases and noting distinguishing or conflicting case law.
  3. Prepare initial drafts of the responses to Discovery requests, garnishment interrogatories, bankruptcy claim requests, subpoenas. summonses and other pleadings for the attorneys' review and approval.
  4. Create deposition summaries utilizing the original depositions.
  5. Handle all job related information with the utmost of confidentiality.
  6. Make the arrangements for depositions, witness statements, and other case related meetings/events.
  7. Organize and/or create trial exhibits from information, data, or photos, etc. provided by the attorneys.
  8. Assist at trial, at depositions, etc. as needed.
  9. Analyze and respond to Arkansas Freedom of Information Requests made to the City Attorney's office.
  10. The person in this position is the first person met by the public and by employees as they enter the City Attorney offices. The paralegal accordingly greets and assists the internal and external customers with courtesy and tact.
  11. Answers the general City Attorney phone line, routing calls and relaying messages in a timely and efficient manner.
  12. Carry out special project assignments as assigned by the City Attorney or Assistant City Attorney.
  13. Formats, types, and makes the proper number of needed copies of letters, memoranda, correspondence, legal pleadings, and other documentation as needed by the attorneys. The paralegal must carefully examine each document produced to ensure that spelling and basic grammar are correct before the final document is released.
  14. Responsible for maintaining record keeping systems for hard copy and electronic files.
  15. Purchase supplies for the Division in a manner compliant with all City purchasing policies to ensure all necessary supplies are constantly available. Organize and maintain all purchasing records.
  16. Reconcile the Division's Purchasing Card monthly. Complete purchase requisitions.
  17. Responsible for creating check requests as needed for the Department's bill paying.
  18. Prepare travel authorization forms, make travel and hotel reservations as needed and prepare final travel reconciliation forms.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. This position requires Paralegal Certification from an accredited educational organization, a Bachelor's Degree and at least one year's Paralegal experience, or a High School Diploma and at least three years' Paralegal experience performing the above described job duties (especially the described essential job duty involving legal research ) under the supervision of a licensed attorney.
  2. Ability to multi-task and complete work independently in a timely and reliable manner.
  3. Position requires sharp organizational skills.
  4. Ability to use computers and software. Must have excellent online legal research skills. Must have at least intermediate spreadsheet skills, at least intermediate powerpoint skills, excellent word processing skills, and ability to use e-mail related software. Must have ability to use standard office equipment (fax, telephone, copier, scanner, etc.). Must have ability and willingness to learn new software as needed.
  5. Ability to use mathematics involving the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  6. Must have good teamwork skills, as well as good interpersonal skills such as to courteously and tactfully render excellent customer service to all internal and external customers and City Attorney team members.
  7. Must have physical abilities to communicate effectively with others verbally (including on the telephone) and in writing; understand others' communications, both verbal and in writing; sit continuously for long periods of time; move from location to location; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and manipulate computer keyboard and papers with fingers; and stoop or bend (such as to work with and around filing cabinets). Must be able to routinely lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  8. The work environment is generally continuous interruptions and a ringing phone, with people talking nearby while work is being performed.
