Traffic Technician ( Signal Technician)

SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing and repair activities of mechanical, electrical and electronic traffic control equipment including, video detection, signal coordination, traffic preemption systems and other signal devices and apparatus; for performing a wide range of inspections and preventative maintenance work on traffic signals and street lights; for responding to knockdowns and/or malfunctions of traffic signal/street light equipment; for making field repairs of traffic signal controls and auxiliary equipment; for performing electrical system wiring and installations, locating conduit, cables; replacing lamps; for investigating complaints and reports of malfunctions and advising management if continued operation of equipment would present a problem or safety hazard.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide responsive and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, equipment repair and installation of various traffic control equipment and related devices.
Investigate and respond to complaints from the public and implement resolution of problems.
Maintains and repairs traffic signals and beacon, including performing electrical and electronic diagnoses of problems.
Investigates complaints and reports of malfunctions relating to traffic signals and pedestrian crossings.
Maintains inventory, maintenance, and repair equipment for signals, beacons, and over ITS devices.
Locates and marks underground traffic signal utilities, cables, conduits, and all City of Bentonville fiber cabling to prevent damage and maintain functionality.
Assists IT Department in locating trouble spots throughout the City of Bentonville fiber optics cabling.
Maintains records on signal maintenance and ensures regular maintenance is performed according to schedules.
Maintains ISMA Traffic Signal Certifications.
Assists the police department with accessing video recordings and monitoring BBS status and video detectors.
Operates bucket truck during installation or repair of signals, as well as numerous hand tools, and various electronic and electrical test equipment.
Troubleshoots electronic and electrical problems.
Ability to maintain considerable knowledge of traffic signalization, maintenance, testing and repair of components.
Maintains program controllers, detectors, conflict monitors, video detection equipment, preemption, battery backup systems, video encoders, Ethernet switches, various software, and various IT components.
Working knowledge of advanced computer and networking skills associated with traffic signals.
Ability to operate equipment such as bucket truck and other machines in the performance of job duties.
Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors, and co-workers are essential elements of this position. Other duties may be assigned.
Work “On-Call” as scheduled.
Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of apprenticeship program or other traffic maintenance school.
A valid driver’s license.
Knowledge of Principles and practices of the construction, installation, and maintenance of electrical and electronic devices
Communicate effectively during in-person contact with the public and other County personnel.
Ability to read and interpret plans, schematics, wiring diagrams, work orders and develop changes to accommodate field conditions.
Maintain accurate records.
Knowledge of Computer business applications (Microsoft Office) and specialized applications related to traffic control equipment operations and diagnostics.
Knowledge on MUTCD and ARDOT standard specifications relating to traffic control devices.
International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification(s) in Work Zone, Level I.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate degree (A. A.) from four-year college or university and two (2) years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
