Summary

The purpose of this job is to perform skilled/manual work functions related to maintenance and operation of the Parks & Recreation Department sports fields. Duties and responsibilities include preparing sports fields for practice and games, carrying out a year-round sports field maintenance program of sports fields, establishing and maintaining sports field turf (natural and synthetic), performing janitorial/custodial duties, installing, and repairing park structures and equipment, and performing a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting relationships, work assignments, work schedules may be subject to change to meet City needs or operational requirements. Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors, and co-workers are essential elements of this position. Other duties may be assigned.

Schedule is Monday-Friday, but some weekends and holidays would have required attendance.

Sows grass seed, plants trees, shrubs, or flowers according to instructions and planned design of landscaped area. Grubs and weeds around bushes, trees, and flower beds.

Plants new and repairs established lawns. Trims and edges around walks, flower beds, mowing, and walls

Applies herbicide or mulch to designated areas. Sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides as designated by crew leader and/or maintenance supervisor.

Trims hedges and shrubs. Prunes trees and cultivates gardens. Sprays trees and shrubs and applies supplemental liquid and dry nutrients to lawn and trees as designated by crew leader and/or maintenance supervisor.

Picks up or carts away paper and rubbish. Rakes and bags leaves. Cleans grounds and removes litter.

Digs trenches and installs drain tiles. Keeps storm drains and culverts free of debris.

Repairs and paints, benches, tables, and guardrails, and assists in repair of roads, walks, buildings, and mechanical equipment.

Makes repairs to concrete and asphalt walks and driveways.

Repairs fences, gates, walls, and walks. Paints fences and outbuildings.

Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears.

Makes minor repairs on equipment such as lawn mower, spreader, and snow removal equipment.

Mows grass, prunes shrubs, trims trees, and plants flowers and shrubs from parks. Removes leaves and other debris from parks.

Drives vehicles such as backhoe, trucks, and tractors. Repairs and maintains tools and equipment

Keeps Park facilities painted and free of debris or graffiti.

Removes dead or damaged trees or tree limbs.

Maintains fall surface under play structures.

Shovels snow from walks, biking trails, and spreads ice-melt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup.

Performs some janitorial/custodial duties.

Responsible for working with Parks Maintenance Supervisor and department Crew Leaders to respond to city services during inclement weather events. This position is considered an essential services position that requires work to be performed during extreme weather and in natural disaster events.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two (2) years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Sports Field/turf Management experience is preferred. Someone with a background in sports, baseball, softball, soccer, etc. is desired.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS.

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. Position may require a commercial driver’s license.
