Job Description: About Us!Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the School of Medicine will offer a medical degree-granting program that builds on conventional medicine with an inclusive, compassionate, and whole health approach. The School of Medicine embraces self-care to empower students to care for their patients and themselves and helps them rise to the health challenges of the 21st century with a focus on mental, physical, social, and emotional health. The School will have an attached clinic for training in these concepts. Currently, the School of Medicine seeks to be a national medical school with the goal of welcoming its inaugural class in 2025, pending programmatic and institutional accreditation.Construction of the 154,000 square-foot building has begun with the goal of completing and welcoming the first class in Fall 2025, pending accreditation. AWSOM will be located east of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. What We SeekWe are building a cadre of medical professionals trained in conventional medicine and in Whole Health, by reimagining medical education. We seek leaders and faculty who are excited by this endeavor. We are building a health care learning and delivery environment in which diversity is a strength and highly valued. Ideal candidates are committed to our goals of inclusive excellence, and to facilitating optimal health for all using a whole health approach.Faculty and staff members will contribute to the development and rollout of the ARCHES curriculum, which is built on evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning. All six areas of the curriculum will be interwoven throughout the four-year curriculum. About The PositionThe Executive Dean will be a dynamic, distinguished leader in academic medicine, one who is passionate about the mission, vision, and values of Alice L. Walton School of Medicine. The Executive Dean will have the opportunity to shape and expand the School of Medicine through targeted recruitment of high impact faculty members, investments to support growth in extramural research grants, and research discoveries that impact communities locally, nationally, and globally. The successful candidate will have a track record of collaborative partnership across organizational boundaries, demonstrate the learning agility that is characteristic of great leaders, and exhibit the cultural intelligence to effectively engage all those who contribute to the School. Position Rank/ClassificationThe position is open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor levels, depending on experience and qualifications. We are building a workplace and learning climate in which inclusive excellence and whole health principles are inextricable parts of our culture and practices. While AWSOM does not have a tenure track, we are building a school that will facilitate exceptional professional development opportunities for our faculty and other team members. Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific To The Position:The Executive Dean will:
  • Serve as a senior executive leader and represent the Dean in her absence.
  • Build a foundation of academic excellence and national distinction.
  • Provide leadership to the faculty in all academic matters, including research and curricular initiatives, as well as faculty recruitment, to build a reputation for research excellence and innovation.
  • Work with colleagues across the enterprise to equip and support physicians to explore new ways to bridge the gap to better healthcare.
  • Work effectively with hospital partner leadership to promote the success of the clinical enterprise and to ensure its support of the academic mission.
  • Ensure that the teaching programs provide a positive learning experience, offering high-quality and innovative educational opportunities to facilitate the transition from student to professional.
  • Provide the necessary stewardship of the School of Medicine’s resources to ensure successful execution of its primary missions, overseeing development of the financial and administrative systems required to ensure prudent utilization of resources in each of its missions.
  • Ensure accountability for effective resource management within each of the School’s units.
  • Serve as principal advocate and spokesperson for the School within the community and to local, national, and international constituencies in the public and private sectors.
  • Serve as the culture officer, responsible for promoting professionalism, high ethical standards, and diversity.
  • Promote collaborative relationships with other schools, colleges, and organizations to further the goal of interdisciplinary health science education, research, and patient care.
  • Develop and expand the School’s philanthropic base, recognition, and respect.
  • Ensure that the School emerges as a leader working in the community it serves, addressing a broad list of needs that impact the community’s health and social welfare.
Minimum EducationThe ideal candidate will be a clinical academic or higher education leader with substantial evidence of leadership and achievement within academic medicine. Qualified candidates will have earned a degree (MD or DO) with a proven track record of leadership. A successful candidate will need experience working in a dynamic and rapidly evolving organization. Minimum Work Experiences And Qualifications
  • Bring a proven track record of progressive institutional-wide leadership experience such as prior experience in a Vice/Associate/Assistant Dean, Department Chair, Institute/Center Director, or Division Chief/Program Director role.
  • Demonstrate expertise at building strong internal and external relationships, with a track record of working with academic partners, physicians, physician-scientists, leaders, diverse management teams and community engagement.
  • Be a collaborative team player who displays “respectful courage” and is highly influential in their ability to propel others forward.
  • Understand the organizational landscape and be able to anticipate the critical issues, opportunities, and threats in the foreseeable future.
  • Develop and mentor the academic careers of current faculty/fellows and be skilled in the recruitment of outstanding new faculty to build high performing, cohesive teams and cultivate a pipeline of next generation leaders.
  • Build relationships that can lead to the productive development of innovative educational programs and research activities across the institution.
  • Promote an environment of accountability and continuous performance improvement by establishing and monitoring concrete performance measures to drive achievement of targeted outcomes.
